Belgian Police Seek Suspect in Islamophobic Attack on Veiled Woman in Anderlecht
Friday 12 April 2019, by
The investigation into the assault on a veiled woman (at the beginning of the month in Anderlecht) is progressing with the release by the police this week of photos of the main suspect in this assault that had outraged, in Belgium and elsewhere.
In its note to the media, the police indicate that "the author is between 20 and 30 years old. He is about 1.80m tall, of robust build, has black hair, a frontal baldness and a thin beard. At the time of the events, he was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt with a black and white patterned band at chest height, a dark blue jogging pants, white sneakers and a blue beanie. He has a small blue Quechua backpack." And to call on any person with information on this individual to contact the investigators.
As recalled by the RTL TVi channel, the victim, a woman of Somali nationality, had been admitted to intensive care the day after this assault, which had occurred near a school. She had then been questioned by the police and an investigation had been opened by the Brussels public prosecutor’s office for attempted murder against "X".
While an Islamophobic act had initially been mentioned, the trail could be linked to a family context or simply an isolated act. The continuation of the investigation will undoubtedly tell us more.
