Belgian Mother Sentenced for Stabbing Daughter Over Secret Islamic Marriage

A 3-year prison sentence was handed down by a Belgian court against a woman who stabbed her daughter following her conversion to Islam and for having married "in secret".
At 54 years old, Behiye was prosecuted for "intentional assault and battery", reports the newspaper La Dernière Heure. For the Brussels Correctional Court, which handled this case, this 3-year suspended prison sentence must make the mother understand that "her behavior is unacceptable".
The facts date back to March 13, 2016, when the mother was invited to the family of the new husband to explain the circumstances of her daughter’s secret marriage. The day before, the newspaper recalls, she had told her parents that she had married and wanted to live her love story with Enis, a young Muslim man.
Her conversion to Islam was not at all to the liking of her parents, who are of the Orthodox Christian faith, writes the newspaper, which indicates that once on the spot, the mother took advantage of being alone with her daughter to take out a knife and stab her. Sara, 19, had been transferred to the hospital with several injuries, including one to the chin and a deeper one to the abdomen.
Before the court, the mother confessed to having feared not seeing her daughter again, and that is what finally happened after this assault, as Sara categorically refused to see her again.
