Belgian Court Tries Parents for Forced Marriage and Abuse of Moroccan Daughter

The trial of a Moroccan man and his wife, prosecuted for mistreating their daughter, opened in a Belgian court in the Saint-Nicolas region.
The young girl, who had just turned 18, had refused to marry a person living in Morocco, whom her parents had recommended to her.
Despite her categorical refusal, the young Moroccan was forced to go to Morocco to contract a marriage with the man chosen by her parents.
Back in Belgium and faced with her intention to have the marriage annulled, the young woman was the victim of physical violence, going as far as being burned with an iron. Faced with such actions, she finally ran away before filing a complaint with the police.
Although they firmly denied the accusations of their daughter, the parents face a sentence of up to 3 years in prison and a fine of 10,400 euros. The public prosecutor’s office also requested the annulment of the marriage. The verdict will be handed down on October 22nd.
