Belgian Parents Sentenced for Forced Marriage Attempt and Assault on Daughter

A couple was sentenced on October 22 to two years in prison, half of which was suspended, and must pay a fine of 2,000 euros for having assaulted and forced their 18-year-old daughter to marry. This is the verdict of the Termonde Correctional Court in Belgium.
They are paying the price for their misconduct. In Saint-Nicolas, the parents of an 18-year-old woman tried to marry her off to a stranger, reports Belga. However, they were met with the categorical refusal of their daughter.
Annoyed, the defendants did not hesitate to assault their daughter. She immediately fled the family home.
The young woman is still suffering from post-traumatic stress, explains the victim’s lawyer. Her parents, for their part, denied the facts.
The Termonde Correctional Court handed down its judgment on Tuesday: the parents are sentenced to two years in prison, half of which is suspended, and a fine of 2,000 euros.
