Belgian Parents Sentenced for Forced Marriage and Abuse of Daughter

The Criminal Chamber of Saint-Nicolas in Belgium sentenced a couple of Moroccan origin to 2 years suspended imprisonment, with a fine of 2,000 euros, for mistreatment of their daughter.
The 18-year-old girl had filed a complaint against her parents for forcing her to marry a much older individual and for physical abuse.
Forced into marriage and a trip to Morocco to meet her future husband, the young girl had been exposed to physical abuse from her parents, going so far as to burn her with an iron. She had fled the family home before denouncing them to the police.
In court, the parents maintained their statements, denying any physical violence against their daughter and any intention to subject her to a forced marriage.
