Bed Bug Outbreak on Mediterranean Ferry Prompts Apology and Fumigation

A Marseille/Tanger-Med crossing resulted in bed bug bites on the Girolata. La Méridionale apologizes to the victims.
"Some of our passengers have recently been victims of bed bugs on the Girolata, we regret it and we apologize to them," can be read in a message posted on the company’s Facebook page. The latter explains that the presence of this insect is in no way a translation of a lack of cleanliness and hygiene with which it does not compromise. "For a few days now, during the Girolata’s stopovers, radical actions are being taken by 2 companies specialized in biocide and fumigation treatment. The passenger areas of the ship have been and are being treated with powerful insecticides such as PERMAX 250 (biocide) & DOBOL (fumigant)," assures La Méridionale. These areas are: the prayer room (biocide spread on the floor and carpets), Bar Lounge and Bar Lido (dismantling of the seats and biocide spread), the armchair lounge (dismantling of baseboards and seats, fumigation through the vents) and the games room (biocide on the floor and ceilings).
These actions, however, did not prevent bed bugs from invading the Girolata. "This insect is generally carried in luggage during trips and is a scourge for the tourism industry. Although preventive and curative treatments are regularly applied, the total eradication of these insects remains very complex," the company said. It also assures that "the prevention actions at each stopover in Marseille are maintained before a new shock treatment scheduled in a few days." "Extremely concerned about hygiene and comfort, we remain vigilant on this issue, because we have at heart to welcome you in the best conditions on board our ships," concludes La Méridionale.
