At the Request of Its European Clients, a Chinese Airbag Manufacturer Creates a Subsidiary in Tangier
A Chinese manufacturer of fabrics and airbags has confirmed its establishment in Tangier. The subsidiary was created at the request of its clients, a sign that Morocco’s automotive industry is directly attracting suppliers of vehicle manufacturers and equipment makers already established in the kingdom.
The HMT group, or Huamao (Xiamen) New Materials Technology, has created a wholly owned subsidiary in Morocco. Named HMT Tangier New Technical Materials, it was established on May 25, 2026, with declared capital of 9,000 euros, according to the group’s official half-year report.
The new company is registered in the Cité Mohammed VI Tanger Tech. It is to operate in the manufacture of technical fibers and automotive safety components, particularly the fabrics and bags used in airbags. HMT nevertheless specifies that the Moroccan subsidiary has not yet officially begun its activities.

The Chinese group presents this establishment as a direct response to requests from its clients. It does not disclose their identities, but this detail suggests that manufacturers or equipment makers already present in Morocco want to bring their suppliers closer to their production sites. HMT also manufactures seat belts and ranks among the leading Chinese suppliers of passive safety components for the automotive industry.
An Establishment Prepared for a Year
HMT’s arrival in Tangier did not start from scratch. In August 2025, the company had already signed an agreement with the company responsible for developing Tanger Tech concerning an investment and production project in the zone, the Quotidien du peuple reported at the time. The establishment of the subsidiary therefore marks a further concrete step following that initial agreement.
Choosing Tangier enables the manufacturer to move closer to one of Morocco’s main automotive hubs, near Tanger Med and the many companies established around the Cité Mohammed VI Tanger Tech. The city is currently attracting several Chinese equipment makers seeking to produce in Morocco to serve both local factories and European markets.

HMT has not yet disclosed the final amount of its investment in Morocco, the planned production capacity, or the expected number of jobs. The creation of the company therefore does not yet make it possible to say that the factory is operational. It nevertheless confirms that the project announced in 2025 is now progressing under an officially established Moroccan structure.
