Amateur Soccer Tournament Celebrates Immigrant Heritage in French Neighborhoods

A documentary tracing the history of the national neighborhood cup, invented in Créteil, has been available on Amazon Prime since Thursday.
Originally called the CAN des quartiers, this amateur football competition brings together different teams, composed according to the country of origin of the players’ parents. The first edition was held in May 2019 with eight teams (Algeria, Cameroon, Guinea, Mali, Morocco, DR Congo, Senegal and Tunisia).
Directed by Jesse Adang, the documentary aired on Amazon is an immersion into the backstage of the 2022 edition of this amateur football competition that now brings together entire neighborhoods in the Île-de-France region. The film is titled Tour du Monde, le phénomène foot des quartiers.
Note that the national neighborhood cup is a very popular event among football fans. Professional players such as Riyad Mahrez or Karim Benzema have contributed to its promotion on social networks. The final of the national neighborhood cup was even broadcast live on Amazon Prime on July 2.
