Alleged Heiress Scam: Russian-German Woman on Trial for $275,000 Fraud in NYC

Friday 29 March 2019, by Amine

Recently, the trial began in New York of a 28-year-old Russian-German woman named Anna Sorokin. The latter, by handling things well, managed to live the high life at the expense of people and institutions whose trust she abused, a trust gained through cunning. She had, for example, a stay at the Mamounia paid for $62,000 by... a Vanity Fair photo editor!

She is blonde, has blue eyes, and is a con artist who lives like a queen at the expense of others. But they are not men she is defrauding, or at least not only... Anna Sorokin was born in Russia in 1991 and settled in Germany in 2007. Her father was a truck driver. But to those she approaches, she is Anna Delvey and pretends to be a rich heiress, daughter of a wealthy man, diplomat, oil tycoon or others. She also claims to have influence. And it works!

By doing this, she has managed to defraud several people, as well as hotels and financial institutions. Let’s take the Mamounia and the Vanity Fair photo editor. The Huffpost writes: "During her trial, which opened on Wednesday, the prosecutor was particularly interested in a trip the young woman took to Marrakech. A trip during which she booked a suite at the Mamounia, at $6,000 a night and ’offered’ her friends extras like tennis lessons or poolside breakfasts, as explained to Vanity Fair by one of her victims, Rachel Williams, a photo editor at the same magazine". It’s her who offers and everyone is delighted...

On the other hand, when it comes to actually paying, here come the credit card troubles. She calls Vanity Fair’s Rachel Williams to the rescue, so she can pay while waiting to be reimbursed later. She complies. $62,000 debited.

Another case, this time in Casablanca, is cited. She would have abused the trust of her personal trainer to have her pay her bill at the Four Seasons, as well as a first-class ticket to return to New York.

During this trial, scams amounting to $275,000 are being discussed, in just ten months. Her lawyer would have claimed that Anna Sorokin has only "exploited a system easily impressed by glitter and glamour".

She won’t need to do that anymore, because she has sold her story, destined to become a series. In this sense, the Huffpost writes: "However, she is unlikely to have financial problems for much longer, having recently sold her story to the queen of American television, Shonda Rhimes, to whom we owe successes like Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, or How to get away with murder. A series that will be broadcast on the Netflix streaming platform". Jennifer Lawrence and Margot Robbie are said to have offered to play the role... She will probably watch it from her prison cell.
