Morocco Bans Toxic Nail Products: Health Risks Prompt Nationwide Cosmetic Crackdown
Morocco has just banned the manufacture, import, distribution and use of nail varnishes and gels, and all cosmetic products containing Diphenyl Trimethylbenzoyl Phosphine Oxide, known as TPO.
"This decision follows a thorough evaluation of the available scientific data and international standards relating to this substance. It emerges that TPO, used as a photoinitiator in certain UV-curing nail gels and varnishes, has a concerning toxicological profile," explained the Moroccan Agency for Medicines and Health Products (AMMPS) in an information note for healthcare professionals, beauty sector players and consumers.
The Agency informs that "studies have shown that repeated exposure to this substance could pose health risks, including potential toxic effects". The AMMPS urgently calls on beauty professionals to stop using the products and ensure their withdrawal from the range of products offered to customers. It also asks consumers to check the composition of the products used, particularly nail varnishes and gels, to ensure they comply with the applicable safety standards.
