Alert in Tangier: The FAR and the Gendarmerie are tracking a phantom helicopter

The Royal Armed Forces and the Royal Gendarmerie have been conducting night-time sweeping operations in the skies of Tangier and its surroundings for more than a week. These aerial sorties follow the suspicious intrusion of a helicopter into the airspace of the city, an operation that investigators link to international drug trafficking networks.

Thus, the investigations are carried out with great discretion under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office. The searches are particularly focused on the border areas connecting the prefecture of Tangier-Assilah and the province of Fahs-Anjra. The objective of these patrols is to detect any suspicious movement on the ground and to identify the individuals involved in this aerial incursion.

Testimonies collected from the inhabitants of the areas concerned indicate that overflights of unidentified helicopters have been heard almost daily during certain night periods. The authorities are now trying to determine if these flights are frequent and to identify any potential local complicity within the drug trafficking networks operating in the north of the Kingdom.

A joint commission, bringing together various security services and anti-drug trafficking units, carried out field visits in the middle of last week in several hamlets and douars located between Tangier and Fahs-Anjra. The investigators are also relying on in-depth technical research, including the examination of communication networks and the monitoring of radar data, as the aircraft was detected for two consecutive days.
