Tangier: the army and gendarmerie on maximum alert after suspicious flights

The security authorities in the Tangier region are currently conducting investigations following the sighting of unidentified aircraft flying at low altitude. The investigation is focusing on the trail of international drug trafficking networks using the air route to Spain.

The alert was triggered last week after residents of the Aouama and Hrarech areas reported the sound of planes flying at low altitude. In response, the Royal Armed Forces and the Royal Gendarmerie conducted aerial surveillance operations over the past two nights over Tangier and the prefecture of Fahs-Anjra to secure the area.

Alongside the aerial operations, a joint commission, including representatives from the wilaya, the National Security and the Gendarmerie, carried out field visits. The searches focused on rural sites, particularly in Al Hararch, suspected of serving as clandestine landing or takeoff strips.

According to the initial elements, the Royal Navy is said to have spotted an aircraft at the moment of takeoff before it headed towards the European coast, immediately alerting the Gendarmerie.

This alleged use of the air route comes as maritime controls have been considerably strengthened along the northern coastline. The competent public prosecutor’s office is supervising the investigation to determine the extent of these illicit activities.
