Alcohol Sales Spark Controversy in Moroccan Tourist Region

A lively controversy is currently shaking the commune of Setti Fatma, in the Marrakech region. The cause: the project to open an alcoholic beverage outlet. More than 30 local associations have sounded the alarm, denouncing an initiative that could tarnish the image of this renowned tourist site.
In a petition addressed to the Wali of the Marrakech-Safi region, these citizen organizations express their concern about the potential consequences of such an establishment. They fear in particular repercussions on the health of the inhabitants, especially the young people, as well as a deterioration of the social climate. "These products have negative effects, both psychologically and physically," they point out.
Beyond the public health issues, the associations highlight the risk of damage to the reputation of Setti Fatma, a popular tourist destination for its calm and authenticity. The arrival of a beverage outlet could, according to them, "negatively affect" this image and harm the attractiveness of the region.
Faced with these concerns, the civil society actors call for mobilization. They urge the Wali of the region to intervene and refuse to authorize the opening of this establishment.
