Ajax Midfielder Abdelhak Nouri to Return Home After Two Years in Coma

Friday 7 June 2019, by Said

A little less than two years after a heart attack in the middle of a match, the Dutch international of Moroccan origin Abdelhak Nouri will return home. His family has just made all the arrangements for him to receive the necessary care with them.

This return was revealed this week by a journalist in constant contact with his family. "They are now renovating the house because they want to take care of him at home," explains Willem Vissers, a journalist at Volkskrant.

Despite this transfer from the hospital to the home, the player’s general condition has not improved much since the accident, the journalist specifies. "He is weakly conscious, does he recognize someone if we call him? He seems to react sometimes. If a friend is at his bedside, he sometimes smiles," while adding that the Moroccan will probably never recover.

In July 2017, as Ajax Amsterdam were playing a friendly match against Werder Bremen’s team, Abdekah Nouri suddenly collapsed on the pitch and a few hours later a laconic message from the club mentioned irreversible damage. "We are deeply saddened to learn that Appie Nouri has been diagnosed with severe and permanent brain damage. All our thoughts and prayers go out to him and all his loved ones in these difficult times."

A year earlier, the player had officially refused to join the Atlas Lions and the Moroccan national team, the country of origin of his parents. He had never regretted this choice, he said.
