African Nationals Top List of Foreign Inmates in Moroccan Prisons, Report Finds

According to the Moroccan Observatory of Prisons (OMP), Africans are at the top of the list of foreign inmates in Moroccan prisons. Europe occupies the 2nd place followed by Arab countries.
In the latest count, Morocco had 1,132 foreign inmates in its prisons, including 69 women, from Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the Americas, the Observatory said in its annual report on the situation of penitentiary establishments and detainees in Morocco.
According to geographical affiliation and nationality, 122 prisoners are Nigerien nationals, while 195 are Europeans, including 73 Spanish nationals and 70 French nationals, followed by Arab countries with 133 detainees, including 55 Algerians.
To recall, the OMP had published a guide for foreign inmates in December as part of its strategy to protect the fundamental rights of prisoners, while providing humanitarian support to them and their families in a migratory context marked by new prison issues.
The objective is to inform and raise awareness among foreign inmates about their rights and their incarceration situation, while facilitating communication with the internal (prison) and external environment, recalls the same source.
