US Adds Moroccan Terrorist Leader to Global Blacklist, Citing Mali Threat
Saturday 20 July 2019, by
According to a recent ranking by the United States, the Moroccan Ali Maychou, a leading member of a terrorist movement active in northern Mali, is one of the most dangerous terrorists in the world.
Two members of "Jamaat-Nusrat al-Islam Wal-Muslimin", in Mali, described as "dangerous", have been identified and placed on the US global terrorism blacklist. This is the result of coordination between the US Department of State, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA-foreign intelligence) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI-domestic security).
The Moroccan Ali Maychou is one of them. According to the description, the terrorist is a man born in 1983 in Taza, whose nom de guerre is sometimes "Abou Abderrahmane Es-Sanhadji", sometimes "El Maghribi Abou Abderrahmane".
The United States presents him as the designated qadi (judge) of "Nusrat al-Islam". Ali Maychou holds a prominent position within the "international terrorist" network in Mali and in the nomenclature of "Nusrat al-Islam". He is also accused of having participated in at least one deadly attack that would have killed dozens of people in the ranks of the Malian regular army.
The terrorist himself claims responsibility for certain attacks in several videos. In 2018, Ali Maychou had also threatened to attack voters during the presidential election in Mali.
The United States is taking measures to defeat the terrorist, in particular "depriving Ali Maychou of the resources needed to plan and carry out terrorist attacks".
