Ziyech Eyes AFCON 2025 Comeback: Morocco’s Prodigal Son Seeks Redemption

After an absence of nearly a year, the attacking midfielder Hakim Ziyech could return to the Moroccan national team. He hopes to defend the Moroccan flag at the next Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025).
Since his last gathering in September 2024 against Lesotho and Gabon, Hakim Ziyech (64 caps, 25 goals and 12 assists) has not played for the Moroccan team due to increased competition, lack of playing time at Galatasaray, his turbulent transfer to the club of Al-Duhail (Qatar) and a supposed rift with Walid Regragui. So far, he has not put in good performances that could motivate his return to the Moroccan national team.
At the end of May, the Moroccan international Hakim Ziyech left the Qatari club of Al-Duhail, only four months after his arrival. Without a club, does he have a chance to return to the national team? According to Soufiane Aboujad, the 32-year-old player has not retired from international football and has not set any conditions for Walid Regragui regarding his return. His wish would be to be called up in preparation for the 2025 AFCON, which will be held from December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026 in Morocco for the second time after the 1988 edition. It remains to be seen whether Regragui, who is betting on talents to offer the continental trophy to Morocco, will call him up.
