Zineb El Kharroubi: Marrakech Airport Arrest and Gen Z 212 Trial

Aged 28 and usually residing in Paris, Zineb El Kharroubi was arrested on February 12 as she stepped off the plane. Placed under judicial supervision, she is accused of “inciting the commission of offenses online.” She has thus become the first figure from the diaspora movement to be prosecuted on Moroccan soil.

According to RFI, these proceedings come in the wake of protests that shook the kingdom between September and October 2025. The “Gen Z 212” collective was calling for social reforms, including increased public investment in healthcare and education.

Her relatives strongly contest the charges, insisting that the activist “only reposted slogans announcing gatherings in France” and never called for violence. The young MRE faces up to one year in prison for these digital shares made during a period of unrest that left three people dead and several hundred injured in the country.
