Women’s AFCON: end of the drama, Morocco keeps its tournament

In a statement published by Minister Gayton McKenzie, the South African authorities specified that no official decision nor any communication from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) had been received regarding a change of host country for this 16-team tournament.

The minister emphasized that the remarks of his deputy minister should not be interpreted as a confirmation of a takeover of the organization rights, reaffirming that Morocco remains the officially designated country to host the competition. However, Pretoria indicated that it remains ready to take on this role if CAF were to request an alternative.

This clarification comes as the organization is progressing under the aegis of Morocco. The draw for the final phase was held on January 15 at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Maâmora, distributing the qualified teams into the following groups:

• Group A: Morocco, Algeria, Kenya, Senegal
• Group B: South Africa, Tanzania, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire
• Group C: Nigeria, Malawi, Egypt, Zambia
• Group D: Cameroon, Ghana, Cape Verde, Mali

To date, Morocco remains the host country of the competition, and the preparations continue in accordance with the schedule established by CAF.
