Violent Shootout Erupts as Police Attempt Drug Dealer Arrest in Casablanca

Consternation in Casablanca. While police officers went to arrest a drug dealer last Thursday in the Rmila district of Ain Chock, his relatives who came to the rescue tried to free him. This resulted in a sustained exchange of gunfire. This caused a great scare among the population.

The daily Assabah, which describes this Casablanca western, talks about a "violent altercation between the dealer’s relatives and the police who only ended after several warning shots from the officers who had to arrest the suspect following a warrant issued against him for his involvement in drug and psychotropic trafficking".

But it was without counting on the fierce resistance put up by the suspect’s relatives. To complicate the task of the police, the relatives in question "blocked the alleys leading to his home, requiring reinforcements from the law enforcement forces to better control the situation and proceed with the arrest of the suspect," Assabah continues in its description of the events.

In this situation where the lives of the population were endangered, the police were pelted with stones and glass bottles, particularly from the neighboring houses’ terraces, without being destabilized.

To spare the passers-by, Assabah reports that "the police were forced to use their service weapons, firing 9 warning shots, 2 of which hit the suspect’s brother and one of his acquaintances." A press release from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) will later specify that the danger emanating from the suspects was neutralized and the wanted suspect was taken into custody, while the two injured were placed under medical supervision, pending the conclusion of the investigation conducted under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office.
