Veiling on Moroccan channels: a journalist reignites the debate

On her Facebook page, the journalist expressed her bitterness at the dress code restrictions in force on the air. "My heart is saddened by the fact that the presentation of news on our channel is still forbidden to us because of the veil," she wrote, however assuring that "the creative heart finds its way" regardless of the barriers.

Described as "courageous" by many internet users, Nadia Layoubi’s statement has reopened the discussion on the selection criteria in Moroccan public broadcasting, opposing professional competence to appearance requirements.

For the record, Nadia Layoubi, a specialist in environmental issues, has been wearing the hijab since 2016. She had been the first journalist to appear veiled on the 2M airwaves as part of her programs, but access to the news anchor’s chair remains, according to her, closed to her.
