Unauthorized Car Guards Extort Beachgoers in Casablanca's Ain Diab District

Car guards operating in the Ain Diab area have resumed exploiting the city streets of Casablanca by imposing fees on citizens visiting the coast, making it difficult for the municipality to establish the principle of free parking.

While the city of Casablanca has opted for the implementation of a unified system in the coastal area of Ain Diab, some car guards continue to cause disorder by extorting users along the coast. Previously, the Casablanca municipality had considered installing parking meters to replace car guards who set up haphazardly on main streets, without any authorization or documentation allowing them to carry out this activity.

"Some people in the Ain Diab area have resumed exploiting the city streets by imposing fees on citizens visiting the well-known coast," the vice-president of the Casablanca municipal council told Al3omk. He reminded that "the municipality had already issued a decision establishing free parking for cars and motorcycles in the coastal area of Ain Diab, but the phenomenon of ’yellow vests’ has once again taken over the area."

While "the municipality is still trying to impose a system to end the disorder and anarchy in this sector, which worries Casablanca residents given the numerous complaints addressed to the council for several months," "the parking problem remains, particularly in the Ain Diab area, where fees exceeding reasonable rates are imposed, sometimes reaching 20 dirhams, without any legal basis," explained the vice-president of the municipal council.

On Wednesday, during its ordinary session, the municipal council of Casablanca adopted new measures aimed at reorganizing the car guarding sector. One of these measures is the establishment of specifications to regulate the sector.
