UEFA Backs Morocco's Inclusion in European Bid for 2030 World Cup

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin is in favor of adding Morocco to the European bid for the 2030 World Cup, despite his previous opposition to intercontinental bids. He believes this would be beneficial for the geographically close countries of Spain, Portugal and Morocco.

Although Morocco lost the bid to host the 2026 World Cup, Ceferin points out that the national team surprised by reaching the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, eliminating Spain and Portugal.

The UEFA Congress in Lisbon began with a message of support from the Portuguese Prime Minister for the intercontinental bid, which also received the approval of FIFA President Gianni Infantino and African Confederation President Patrice Motsepe. Europe and Africa account for 109 of the 211 FIFA members. Countries with bids in the running will not be able to vote in the election scheduled for September 2024.

Meanwhile, South America has also launched its own bid for the 2030 World Cup, with four participating countries, including Uruguay, which hosted the first tournament in 1930, Argentina, Chile and Paraguay. Saudi Arabia also has ambitions to host a World Cup and could submit a bid including Egypt in Africa and Greece in Europe. However, it is uncertain whether UEFA will allow one of its members to be part of a competing bid.
