Two French sailors missing off Tangier catamaran evacuation

Search efforts intensify off Tangier. Two French nationals have been missing since the night of Saturday to Sunday after reporting a leak on their catamaran. Moroccan authorities found the vessel completely empty.

The alert was triggered in the middle of the night. On Sunday, around 2:15 a.m. local time, the National Maritime Coordination and Rescue Center was notified of the critical situation of the catamaran "Stella". Response teams eventually located the vessel just five kilometers off the Tangier coast. Surprisingly, the boat was still afloat, but its occupants had vanished, leaving behind an empty life raft. According to BFM and AFP, the ship was immediately towed to the port of Asilah, about forty kilometers further south, while the cause of this incident remains unknown for now.

Rescuers are now focusing their efforts on searching for a motorized dinghy, the only hope of finding the sailors alive. Adrien Danzé, father of one of the two passengers, confirmed that the crew communicated one last time around 4 a.m. to announce the evacuation of the vessel. This troubling disappearance tragically recalls the fate of the catamaran "Love-Love" in November 2012. Caught in a storm off Saïdia, the accident claimed the lives of four French nationals aged 60 to 73 and caused the disappearance of a fifth passenger.
