In Morocco, American soldier dives to save comrade and disappears
Two American military personnel are missing off the coast of southern Morocco. According to initial reports, one of them dove into the Atlantic Ocean to rescue his comrade who fell into the water during a hiking excursion. Search operations are ongoing.
The tragedy unfolded this weekend near the Cap Draa training zone. During a walk organized to watch the sunset, a soldier who could not swim fell from the top of a cliff. His comrades first attempted to pull him up by forming a human chain with their belts, without success.

The soldiers involved were in the country as part of African Lion, a major annual military exercise led by AFRICOM. This operation brings together 7,000 members of armed forces from more than thirty NATO partner and allied countries. Military authorities note, however, that this tragic accident is not related to the training maneuvers planned by this large-scale deployment.
