Tomatoes and mandarins drive Moroccan agricultural exports to 2.38 million tonnes

Moroccan exports of fresh fruit and vegetables have returned to a level close to their historic peak. They reached 2.38 million tonnes in 2025, compared with a record 2.48 million tonnes in 2022, according to data from Fruit & Vegetable Facts published this Friday, September 18, by A en Verde.

Two products clearly dominate these sales. Morocco exported 708,000 tonnes of tomatoes and 493,000 tonnes of mandarins in 2025. Their combined volume exceeded 1.2 million tonnes, representing just over half of Moroccan exports of fresh fruit and vegetables.

The European Union remains by far the kingdom’s leading market. It absorbed 1.47 million tonnes in 2025, equivalent to 62% of the total. France led with 634,000 tonnes, ahead of Spain with 362,000 tonnes and the Netherlands with 243,000 tonnes.

However, data compiled by agricultural season show a slowdown in sales to Europe. During the 2025-2026 season, the European Union imported 1.37 million tonnes of Moroccan fresh fruit and vegetables, 10% less than the record 1.54 million tonnes recorded during the previous season.

Tomatoes remain the main Moroccan product sold on the European market. EU imports reached 503,000 tonnes during the 2025-2026 season, compared with 563,000 tonnes a year earlier. Despite this decline, Morocco now supplies nearly 20% of the tomatoes marketed in the Union.

Blueberries advance, avocado falters

Other products held up better. European imports of Moroccan peppers reached a record 165,000 tonnes. They were followed by watermelons with 164,000 tonnes, mandarins with 123,000 tonnes and green beans with 95,000 tonnes.

Berries are also continuing to grow. Moroccan blueberry exports rose from 68,300 tonnes in 2024 to 85,500 tonnes in 2025, an increase of 25%. Raspberry exports exceeded 64,000 tonnes. This growth is expected to continue, as Moroccan blueberry production could increase by a further 70% by 2029.

The situation is significantly less favorable for avocados. European imports from Morocco were almost halved during the 2025-2026 season, falling from more than 100,000 to 54,000 tonnes. The sector was hit by several heatwaves, floods and strong winds.

Outside the European Union, the United Kingdom is strengthening its position among Morocco’s main customers. It imported nearly 330,000 tonnes of Moroccan fruit and vegetables in 2025, up 8% year on year. The strongest increases concerned mandarins, blueberries and peppers, while tomato sales declined slightly.

Russia is following the opposite trajectory. Its purchases fell to 105,000 tonnes in 2025, compared with 355,000 tonnes in 2018. They are now concentrated mainly on mandarins and oranges.
