Morocco Surpasses Spain Tomato Exports Global Market Leader
Morocco is establishing itself as an unstoppable force in international tomato trade. For the fourth consecutive year, the kingdom outpaces Spain in export volume and confirms its dominance in this highly competitive agricultural sector.
The evolution of Moroccan fresh tomato exports shows uninterrupted growth. In 2025, the country shipped 707.6 million kilos, capturing 9.6% of global market share. Over the last decade, its sales volumes have surged by nearly 35%. In contrast, Spain is declining and has remained stuck in fourth place worldwide since 2022, according to a report relayed by FreshPlaza media. The Spanish sector has plummeted 41% in ten years, moving only 537.4 million kilos last year.

Moroccan dominance is also confirmed on the financial front. For the second consecutive year, Morocco’s revenues exceed those of Spain, totaling €1.157 billion against €1.025 billion for its European competitor. On a global scale, Mexico maintains its leading position with 1.987 billion kilos exported, representing 26.9% of global trade and generating €2.346 billion. The Netherlands secures second place by surpassing one billion kilos sold for €2.060 billion, an unprecedented volume level since 2020.

This competition operates in a global sector worth over €10.3 billion. Prices applied vary significantly by exporter. Dutch and Spanish tomatoes sell at the highest average prices, reaching €1.97 and €1.91 per kilo respectively. Morocco markets its production at €1.64 per kilo, an intermediate rate compared to Mexico, which sells its goods at €1.18. Further down the ranking, Turkey and France record export volumes of 402 and 289 million kilos.
