TF1 Anchor Allegedly Blocks Report Featuring Hijab-Wearing Woman, Sparks Controversy

Thursday 21 February 2019, by Said

The presenter of the TF1 television news, Jean-Pierre Pernaut, is said to have refused to broadcast in the 1 p.m. edition a report in which a woman wearing a headscarf appears.

The revelation was made by the Canard Enchaîné, which claims that the journalist categorically refused to broadcast the report. "There will be no veiled women in my news!" Jean-Pierre Pernaut is said to have told his team.

"For his TF1 news, Jean-Pierre Pernaut notes that a report is devoted to the draft law making the presence of the French and European flags and the refrain of ’La Marseillaise’ mandatory in classrooms. Passing his head in the viewing room ’JPP’ realizes that the man-on-the-street interview carried out gives a voice in particular to a mother of students wearing the headscarf, proud that her two kids know the national anthem. Pernaut stops everything: "There will be no veiled women in my news!" reads the Canard.

This report was not broadcast at 1 p.m., as the presenter demanded, but it was finally broadcast in the 8 p.m. news, the satirical weekly specifies.

The journalist’s digital life has been scrutinized in detail by the BuzzFeed website, revealing that he likelike a lot of far-right posts and conspiracy content. As an example, in 2016 he liked a post from one of his journalist friends who wrote: "One of the homeless people I take care of tells me that in the shelters, migrants take all the good places: they are numerous, young and quite united against the ’Europeans’ whom they beat to exclude them from beds and meals..." A little later in his news he will say "There, no more room for the homeless but at the same time the centers for migrants continue to open everywhere in France"...
