Muslim Student Alleges Discrimination at Etam Store Over Hijab During Job Search

A young Muslim student wearing a veil and looking for a job went this week to an Etam store in Montpellier to drop off her CV and cover letter. Unfortunately, she was very poorly received by the store manager who reproached her for her veil.
This is what she claims in a video posted on Twitter where she recounts her misadventure. "I went into a store to drop off my CV and cover letter. I went in, smiling etc... and I spoke with the manager. She was smiling at first and then I said I was looking for a job and I would like to drop off my cv," to which the Etam store manager would have replied "no but are you kidding, I hope you’re not serious. You’re veiled and you’re asking me for a job. And it hasn’t even been two days since Women’s Day."
Shocked, the young woman is unable to answer her, under the stunned gaze of many customers in the store. Asking her for explanations, the manager retorts that she must first remove her veil before entering. "I’m sorry but I don’t accept veiled women."
Faced with the scale of this affair on Twitter and the call for a boycott under the hashtag #BoyCottEtam, the Etam management finally reacted on Twitter: "Hello, I am Cédric, the CEO of Etam. I just became aware of what happened in our store. Rest assured that at Etam, we understand your emotion and are sorry for what happened. This is indeed contrary to our values."
The young woman does not intend to stop there and plans to take the matter to court.
