Tensions Escalate as Morocco Warns of Potential Conflict with Algeria

Many observers of Moroccan-Algerian relations have reacted to the statements of Nasser Bourita, Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, before the Foreign Affairs Committee, regarding Algeria’s intention to go to war against the kingdom.
According to some political analysts, the successive diplomatic setbacks suffered by Algeria, particularly on the Sahara issue, would push the eastern neighbor to consider opening an armed conflict with the kingdom. The tensions between the two countries are not new and have intensified in recent years due to the Sahara issue, recalled the Moroccan expert Driss Effina with Rue20, highlighting the diplomatic and political support of Algeria for the Polisario Front and the intensification of Algerian military maneuvers on the borders with Morocco.
These events, also recalled by Bourita, could be interpreted as harbingers of an armed conflict between the two neighbors, which would threaten regional peace and stability. Terrorist organizations like "Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb" and "Daesh" could take advantage of these escalations that would create a security vacuum to expand their sphere of influence, the expert points out, confirming that in the absence of effective international mediation, the crisis between Algeria and Morocco is likely to degenerate into an armed confrontation.
In such a context, Morocco is working to strengthen its relations with the great powers to ensure international support for its cause, and to strengthen and modernize its army in order to fend off any possible Algerian attack, it is said, stressing the crucial role of the United States, the European Union and the members of the UN Security Council in getting Algeria and Morocco to ease tensions and prioritize dialogue.
