Algeria: Morocco will not be drawn into an "open war"

Former Minister of Justice, Mohamed Aujar, sounded the alarm on Monday about the growing tensions with Algeria over the Sahara. During a conference organized by the Al Faqih Titouani Foundation, he called on the United Nations and MINURSO to act firmly to put an end to the provocations of the Polisario and its Algerian support.
Mr. Aujar recalled the remarks made by the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, who had denounced last Friday before the House of Representatives the bellicose intentions of Algiers. He assured that Morocco, despite its growing military power, will not be drawn into an "open war" by its eastern neighbor.
The former minister stressed that Morocco, faced with Algerian provocations since the Sand War in 1963, has always shown restraint. "Morocco and its Kings have always been models of wisdom," he said, insisting on the Kingdom’s desire for peace despite the recent skirmishes in the El Mahbès region.
Mr. Aujar reaffirmed Morocco’s attachment to the Algerian people, while pointing the finger at the responsibility of the Algerian "generals" in the escalation of tensions. He recalled Morocco’s military power and the vigilance of its armed forces, guarantors of border security.
Regarding the issue of the Moroccan Sahara, Mr. Aujar called on the United Nations to fully assume its responsibilities. He recalled that Morocco had brought the Fourth Committee of the UN as early as the early 1960s to demand the return of the Sahara by Spain, thus creating a historical precedent.
According to him, the maintenance of the Sahara issue on the agenda of the Decolonization Commission is now unjustified. "Colonialism has been liquidated since the Green March, and the Sahara is Moroccan, without any possible discussion," he hammered, calling for a reflection on the future of this file within the UN.
