Fuel Prices Deregulated: Morocco's Bold Energy Strategy Unveiled

The Minister of Economy and Finance, Nadia Fettah, explained that fuel prices are no longer set by the State, but by the operators in the sector, assuring that this mechanism remains under strict supervision and that support and energy transition measures are planned.

In response to a written question from the head of the Haraki group in the House of Representatives, Driss Sentissi, the Minister recalled that the administration has no longer set fuel prices since the end of 2015, leaving this freedom to the operators in the sector. "Given the strategic importance of hydrocarbons in the national economy, however, a rigorous monitoring of prices is ensured, both locally and internationally, without infringing on the freedom of pricing granted to companies," she explained.

Nadia Fettah also indicated that the price of diesel has seen an average decrease of 7% in the first half of 2025, compared to a 6.1% decline globally. As for the price of premium gasoline, it fell by 1.9% nationally and recorded a 1.4% drop internationally. The member of the government also referred to the quarterly reports of the Competition Council, which note that the margins made by the distributors "remain at reasonable levels" and that no anti-competitive practices have been detected.

The Minister also reported on the measures deployed by the government to limit the impact of the surge in prices on household purchasing power. She indicated that in the short term, direct subsidies will be granted to the transport sector and that daily monitoring of prices will be ensured at the national and international levels. In the medium and long term, the State is committed to building a strategic stock that can be mobilized in the event of a crisis, working to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels, and developing renewable energies, such as green hydrogen.
