Teide Volcano: Unprecedented Seismic Activity Near Morocco’s Coast

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) and Involcan have recorded three major seismic swarms since the beginning of February. In just a few days, a series of deep tremors struck the area surrounding the world’s third-highest volcanic structure, alerting monitoring networks.

Although these micro-earthquakes are too weak to be felt by the population, their nature has intrigued experts. Volcanologist Stavros Meletlidis says he identified signals “never seen during the network’s 20 years of existence,” describing this activity as “unprecedented on Teide.”

According to initial analyses, this unrest appears to result from movements of gas, steam, and water rather than an upward movement of magma. The phenomenon is part of a phase of gradual reactivation that began in 2016, while the volcano has not erupted on the island of Tenerife since 1909.

For now, no ground deformation has been observed, confirming that magma is not approaching the surface. Despite the trauma left by the 2021 eruption of La Palma, Spanish authorities continue to allow visitors free access to Teide National Park.
