Tarragona Mayor Mediates Tensions After Moroccan Man’s Death Sparks Community Unrest

The mayor of Tarragona, Rubén Viñuales, has committed to easing the growing tensions between the Gypsy and Moroccan communities in Campclar, following the murder of a 30-year-old Moroccan last Sunday.
Viñuales met with Gypsy community leaders in the neighborhood to defuse the situation and also had talks with the Moroccan consul in Tarragona, Ikram Chahine, expressing his "concern" about the demonstrations and potential violence. For the Mayor, "two people are responsible, not the entire communities."
The official also met with the victim’s brother, who does not condone the demonstrations and wants justice to be served calmly. "This is not the way. We must not extrapolate from individual acts," he said, refusing to give in to populist pressure and rejecting the idea of simply increasing the police force.
A third night demonstration took place in Campclar. The alleged aggressor remains untraceable and the Criminal Investigation Division of the Mossos d’Esquadra continues its search. The investigation is still ongoing.
