Moroccan Community Protests Racist Killing in Southern Spain

Dozens of Moroccans demonstrated on Tuesday, June 15 in Murcia, southern Spain, following the racist murder of Youness Blal, a 39-year-old Moroccan, coldly shot dead on Sunday in a bar in the city.

Family members and friends of Youness Blal organized a peaceful march on Tuesday to express their outrage at this crime with a racist character and denounce the hatred expressed by some Spaniards towards Moroccans. In videos of the demonstration circulating on social media, one can see a close relative of the victim urging the young people to demonstrate calmly and without violence so as not to give reason to those who describe the Moroccans of Spain as "anarchists".

According to local media, Youness Blal was with friends on the terrace of a bar when B. M., 52, a former member of the Spanish army, burst into the establishment. Drunk, he began to make racist remarks towards the Moroccans. "All the Moors (Moros) should be dead," he shouted at Youness and his companions, before leaving the premises in an atmosphere he had managed to disturb. Then he returned in the evening, armed with a firearm with which he fired three bullets at Youness in the chest. The victim died on Monday, despite the emergency care he received. The alleged murderer was arrested by the police and placed in custody.
