Tanger Markt Reopens in Belgium After Record Illegal Work Fine

The Brussels labor auditor’s office authorized the Dutch retailer to resume operations after the payment of a €100,000 deposit. The six outlets, located between Antwerp and the Brussels municipalities of Anderlecht, Molenbeek, and Laeken, had been closed since a raid conducted Tuesday evening. Management confirmed that it had fulfilled the required financial obligations to have the seals lifted on Friday.

The investigation, focusing on suspicions of undeclared employment and non-compliance with night-work regulations, revealed almost systematic violations. During the inspections, authorities found that 20 of the 21 employees present were working outside the legal framework. Sixteen workers were identified without residence permits or the mandatory declaration to Social Security, while four others managed to flee.

In addition to the labor violations, police seized €14,000 in cash, along with a stock of coins whose origin remains unclear. To reopen, the company also had to regularize the Dimona declarations and prove that it had taken out insurance against workplace accidents for all its staff. Investigations are continuing to further examine violations of social legislation within the chain.
