Tanger Marché Belgium: Six Supermarkets Closed in Police Raid

The joint operation, carried out on Tuesday evening by the Antwerp and Brussels authorities, targeted all of the Dutch retailer’s establishments in Belgium. In Brussels, the supermarkets in Molenbeek, Anderlecht and Laeken were directly affected by the temporary sealing order. Police identified sixteen employees working illegally, fifteen of whom were residing irregularly in the country. Four other individuals managed to flee during the operation.

In addition to the arrests, more than 14 000 euros were seized on the premises. The Brussels Labour Auditor’s Office stated that the stores’ reopening is conditional on the complete regularisation of the employees’ files. The chain must notably provide Dimona declarations for the workers, prove that it has taken out occupational accident insurance and pay a financial guarantee of 100 000 euros before the seals can be removed.

Tanger Markt is a family-owned Moroccan-Dutch company specialising in the sale of fresh produce and halal meat. Originally a poultry wholesaler, the chain began expanding in the Netherlands in 2013 before gradually establishing itself in Belgium and France. This abrupt closure puts the retailer’s cross-border operations on hold while the judicial investigation and administrative compliance procedures are completed.
