Syrian Refugee Women Caught Smuggling $40,000 at Morocco-Spain Border

Customs elements intercepted, on Monday, June 17, 2019, two Syrian women, at the border with Melilla. They had a large sum of money in foreign currency in their possession. They wanted to smuggle it into Nador.
A search at the border post allowed the Customs agents to find on these two women about 400,000 dirhams in foreign currency. They had hidden it in a way described by the media Rue20 as suspicious.
Indeed, the said sum of money was under their veils. The media does not specify what prompted the agents to search them in this area. Residing in Ceuta, they had the status of refugees.
The women were handed over to the Judicial Police of Nador and were taken into custody. An investigation has been opened to shed light on this whole affair and, in particular, to understand where the money came from and who it was intended for. They will be brought before the courts after that to answer for their actions.
