Study Warns: Moroccan Coast at High Risk of Tsunami from Alboran Sea Fault

Spanish researchers from the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) have recently indicated in a study that tsunamis possibly caused by directional fault jumps, such as the Averroes fault in the central zone of the Alboran Sea, could affect the northern coasts of Morocco.
The team of researchers has calculated the behavior of the water masses of the Alboran Sea in the event of a new seismic episode on the fault, and after analysis, concluded that the coastal areas could be affected by these faults. According to the possible scenarios, the tsunami waves could strongly flood the northern coast of Morocco and the southern coast of Spain. These six-meter high waves could reach the coast between 21 and 35 minutes, reports OKDIARIO.

"These are episodes that are too fast for the current early warning systems to work successfully," warns Ferran Estrada, a researcher at the Institute of Marine Sciences (ICM-CSIC) who recommends a reassessment of tsunami early warning systems. "Giant waves can pose a threat to coastal populations, damage marine and terrestrial infrastructure and trigger an economic and environmental crisis," adds the scientist. According to him, it is "essential to improve planning measures to mitigate the impact of a possible tsunami".
