Morocco’s Coastal Cities Face Growing Tsunami Risk, Minister Warns

The strong swell that has been shaking the Moroccan Atlantic coast for a few years now risks causing disastrous damage in the future. The remarks made by the Minister of Equipment, Abdelkader Amara, have raised consternation within the parliament.
For the PJD minister, there is nothing to indicate that the risks related to climate change will diminish. Worse still, Amara points out during an oral question session in the House of Representatives, tsunamis could hit the cities of Tangier, Rabat and Casablanca, if more robust infrastructure is not deployed.
In response to a question about the situation in the Tangier-Tetouan and Al Hoceima region, the minister affirmed on Monday that all the coastal cities of Morocco will be exposed to an increased risk of flooding, if preventive measures are not taken by the various bodies concerned.
Furthermore, Abdelkader Amara raised the importance of rainwater harvesting, which, if not recovered for agricultural use, is lost in the oceans.
