Spanish Opposition Urges Sanchez to Strengthen Morocco Ties After King's Speech

The recent royal speech expressing "the need to open a ’new unprecedented stage’" between Morocco and Spain continues to stir the Spanish public opinion. The opposition has called on the head of government, Pedro Sanchez, to seize the hand extended by King Mohammed VI.

Reacting to the statements of the Moroccan sovereign, who highlighted "a new relationship with Spain" and "mutual respect" between the two countries, the spokesman for the PP parliamentary group in the Senate, Javier Maroto, indicated that the interests of the two countries "are linked".

In a statement quoted by Europa Press, Maroto was, for once, conciliatory towards the government, admitting that "forms" and "discreet work" are very important in relations between the two countries which, as he admits, are "complex", especially after the massive influx of migrants to Ceuta in May.

According to him, the entry into Spain of the leader of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali, is a "mistake" [...] which is why he prefers "not to pour oil on the fire" when talking about relations between the two countries.

Furthermore, Mr. Maroto considered it "a mistake" that the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, did not reserve his first trip to Morocco, as all leaders who have acceded to the presidency of the government do.
