Spanish PM Sánchez to Visit Morocco as Relations Thaw, King Mohammed VI Announces

King Mohammed VI has given his High Instructions to prepare the official visit to Rabat, in the coming weeks, of President Pedro Sánchez. After clearly expressing his willingness to resume relations with Spain, on the occasion of the Throne Feast, the monarch is thus putting his words into action.
"In all sincerity and trust, we aspire to continue to work with the Spanish government and its president, His Excellency Mr. D. Pedro Sánchez, in order to open a new era in relations between the two countries, on the basis of trust, transparency, mutual respect and respect for commitments," said Mohammed VI on August 20 in his speech on the occasion of the Throne Feast.

The two countries have gone through four months of crisis, which was triggered by Spain’s hosting of the Polisario Front leader, Brahim Ghali. During this period, Morocco had cut off all contact with Spain, and recalled its ambassador to Madrid, Karima Benyaich, for consultations in Rabat. To calm Morocco, President Sanchez thanked his former Foreign Minister, Arancha González Laya. The new minister, José Manuel Albares, has been working discreetly to restore dialogue and resume relations on new foundations.
