Spanish Man Sentenced for Knife Threat Against Moroccan in Mallorca

The Provincial Court of the Balearic Islands has sentenced a man to seven months in prison for threatening a Moroccan with a knife in the municipality of Artà (Majorca), after previously calling him a "fucking Moor".
The judge considered that the defendant, prosecuted for a crime of threats, did not commit a racist act and did not act "exclusively out of contempt and xenophobia", as the prosecution had argued, which had requested one year and eight months in prison against him, reports Europa Press.
The events took place last May, when the accused crossed paths with the victim, whom he did not know, and began to hurl insults at him such as "fucking Moor" and to threaten him with a knife. The Moroccan fled to escape his aggressor, but the latter pursued him, continuing to call him a "fucking Moor".
The man managed to catch up with the victim and corner him against a wall, while threatening him with the knife pointed at his abdomen. The Moroccan escaped unharmed thanks to a team of Civil Guards who quickly intervened to subdue the aggressor.
The accused did not appear at the trial, arguing that he was not informed of the date of the hearing. An argument rejected by the Court, which stressed that he had received a personal summons to attend the trial and had not communicated any case of force majeure preventing him from appearing. The Court convicted him based on the victim’s account, corroborated by the version of the Civil Guard agents.
