Spanish Government Urged to Apologize for Chemical Weapons Use in Rif War

Two political parties have called on the Spanish government to condemn and officially apologize for the military use of chemical agents against the civilian population during the Rif War.
These are the Catalan regional parties the Republican Left and Together for Catalonia, two Catalan independence formations. For their project, they managed to obtain a non-legislative proposal to be debated within the Foreign Affairs Committee of the lower house of parliament, reports Europa Press.
These two political formations have asked the Spanish government to commit to investigating and verifying in an "independent, dignified, rigorous and empirical" manner, and in collaboration with the Moroccan authorities and civil society in the Rif, the consequences of these "systematic" chemical attacks dating from 1921 to 1926.
According to the initiators, the use of this type of weapon would have caused for years and still today "a very high incidence of cancer cases in the bombed regions".
In conclusion, these political parties have demanded that the government of Pedro Sánchez "apologize for the atrocities of the war", including the use of this type of weapon. They have also called on the executive to "act in terms of international cooperation" to compensate the population of the Rif.
