Spain Urged to Compensate Morocco for Chemical Weapons Use in Rif War
The ERC party of the Republican Left of Catalonia has called on Spain to apologize to Morocco for using chemical weapons during the Rif War, which killed thousands of Moroccans.
On Thursday, during the debates on the Democratic Memory Law in Congress, the party leader, Gabriel Rufián, signed an amendment in which he requested the addition of a specific provision on the "recognition of the responsibilities of the Spanish State and the reparation of the damages resulting from the use of chemical weapons in the Rif".
In detail, the party has demanded that Spain create cancer treatment units in the Rif due to what happened between 1922 and 1927. It also asks that acts of "reconciliation, fraternity and solidarity with the victims, their descendants and the entire Riffian community be organized and held".
In Morocco, Spain is asked to build health centers specialized in cancer treatment in the provinces of Nador and Al Hoceima, which will help reduce the high percentages of cancerous diseases.
The ERC also wishes that "any individual economic compensation that could be claimed for the damages caused" be studied.
It should be noted that other provisions contained in this order call for honoring the memory of the missing Moroccans and for justice to be done to Morocco, so that history is not erased.
