Spanish Enclaves Seek Economic Independence from Morocco

The Popular Parliamentary Group (PP) has proposed to set up an inter-ministerial commission that will be responsible for taking rather strong measures to improve the living conditions of the inhabitants of Ceuta and Melilla in the face of pressure from Morocco.

Faced with the difficult living conditions of the populations, in the aftermath of the closure of the Beni Enzar commercial customs office and the recent ban on the entry of Moroccan fish into Ceuta, new measures are needed to spare the population from precariousness.

These two enclaves, according to the local press, are ready to offer their social services to cross-border citizens, namely education, health and administrative services. While Ceuta and Melilla are striving to unconditionally offer their services, Morocco, for its part, is doing everything in its power to make life difficult for the inhabitants of these enclaves, it is complained.

The inter-ministerial commission, coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will be able to look into the real problems of the inhabitants and make proposals to the Spanish government on improving their living conditions. When questioned, the latter responded that a group of customs officers has been set up, but their work has not been made public.
