Spain World Cup Victory Sparks Ceuta Migration Surge

A collective attempt at irregular migration occurred during the night of celebrations following Spain’s World Cup victory. Nearly 200 people reportedly tried to reach Ceuta by swimming from Moroccan shores.

The majority of crossing candidates were of Algerian nationality, according to unofficial sources from the Spanish Civil Guard cited by El Faro de Ceuta. The main attempts were recorded on the Tarajal side, with some departures from Belyounech heading toward Benzú.

Moroccan authorities deployed three vessels, including one large-sized boat, to intercept migrants still present in Moroccan waters. Several dozen people were thus recovered before reaching Ceuta.

On the Spanish side, maritime units of the Civil Guard reinforced their patrols. Security services expected an increase in attempts during the final night, particularly in case of a Spanish team victory.

Morocco Blocks Most Crossings

At Benzú, approximately 30 people reportedly attempted to reach the city by swimming from Belyounech. The Moroccan Royal Navy reportedly intervened to intercept them and bring them back to shore.

Attempts to approach the border fence remained limited. The intervention of Moroccan authorities was presented as the main factor that prevented a massive arrival in the city.

This operation comes as migration pressure increases in Ceuta. Between January 1 and July 15, 2026, 2,826 migrants entered the city by land, compared to 1,133 during the same period in 2025, an increase of 149%.

The management of sea arrivals has also changed. Following a decision by the Spanish Supreme Court, migrants rescued after reaching Ceuta’s waters can no longer be subject to immediate return under the same conditions as before.
