Moroccan Teen’s TikTok Video Goes Viral After Swimming to Ceuta

Chaimae El Grini, a 19-year-old Moroccan girl from Martil, recounted in a video posted on TikTok how she managed the feat of reaching Ceuta by swimming two weeks ago. The publication has become viral on the social network.
Chaimae finally managed to reach Ceuta by swimming after five failed attempts. The young woman was luckier than other young migrants who disappear or die at sea after embarking on this risky adventure.
Most of them choose to leave Morocco to find a job and build, they think, a better future in Spain. This is also the case of Chaimae who aspires to become a lifeguard. "I don’t know where I want to go in particular, but somewhere where there is a lot of work," she confides to FaroTV.
The young woman recounts how she narrowly escaped death several times during her long crossing to Ceuta. Chaimae will have swam for five good hours before reaching the autonomous city. During her journey, she had to face strong sea currents and fog. "You shouldn’t let the sea control you," she explains.
Several Internet users accused the Moroccan woman of encouraging other young people to risk their lives to reach Spain. This is not the case, replied Chaimae, assuring that her video rather aims to draw attention to the risks of such a journey. During this month of August, five Moroccans died at sea while trying to swim to Ceuta.
