Spain Seeks Morocco’s Aid to Bolster Border Security as New Camera System Installed

Moroccan security services will have to resume service pending the installation of intelligent facial recognition cameras, following the withdrawal by Spain of barbed wire along the enclaves of Sebta and Melilla.
Since the beginning of the month, around 35 digital cameras are being installed at border crossings. Requiring several months, the operation has forced the Spanish Prime Minister to ask his Moroccan counterpart to strengthen the security system along the borders.
The latest meeting between the Moroccan Minister of the Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, and his Spanish counterpart was an opportunity to discuss the strengthening of bilateral cooperation on immigration. In this perspective, the Spanish media specified that "the Madrid government has asked the Kingdom to coordinate security efforts along the borders in the coming months".
For their part, the Spanish authorities will call on the companies Gunnebo iberia and Thales Spain, specialized respectively in electronic security solutions and in the industry of computer systems addressed to the aviation, defense and security markets. In addition, the Guardia civil and national police forces will be deployed along the border crossings of the two presidencies.
