Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles visited the permanent naval detachment to examine the progress of the work. The objective is to improve both the operational capabilities of the navy and the living conditions of military personnel.

According to El Debate, the site will receive new electro-optical sensors, a surveillance radar and a laser rangefinder. A thermal camera will also make it possible to track vessels day and night, including in bad weather.

Enhanced surveillance in the heart of the Mediterranean

This equipment will be used to detect and identify ships circulating around the island. Madrid notably invokes the fight against drug trafficking, irregular immigration and threats likely to affect navigation in this strategic zone of the western Mediterranean.

The program also includes the construction of new housing for military personnel, the modernization of the water production system and the strengthening of fuel storage capacity. This work should allow the detachment to remain autonomous despite its isolation.

The permanent military presence above all allows Spain to assert its sovereignty over the island and to have an immediate capacity for observation and reaction.
